Purchasing DVDs

The movie industry also makes profit off of selling their movie as DVDs. Even though many DVD rental stores going bankrupt because of competitors like Netflix, and On Demand with Dish Satellite, but it is naïve to say that people do not still purchase DVDs or Blu-Rays. As you can see from the chart below when "The Hunger Games" came out on DVD and Blu-Ray it made $107,158,418 dollars in revenue on DVD sales alone. Billions of dollars are made on people purchasing DVD's every year. It is no secret that movie studios make a lot of profit off of DVD sales, especially if they release their films around christmas.

Job Opportunities Continued and Filming at Different Locations

When a movie goes to a location, there are many people that are employed in that area to help out with the filmmaking process. This has the ability to improve the economy dramatically as the film industry is providing hundreds of unemployed people contracted employment. Filming on location also gives local business owners more profit. Because the cast and crew of film will be eating in their restaurants, staying in their hotels, using the gas stations etc. A recent example of this is when the film crew of "The Descendants",  filmed on location in Hawaii. The hotel that it was filmed in where actor George Clooney stayed is still pulling in many tourist today. People come to stay in the hotel suite where  George Clooney had filmed in."We're still feeling the effects of 'Jurassic Park,'" says Sue Kanoho the executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau. Even the the movie was released in 1993. As you can see filming on location can provide many job opportunities for local business owners, and bring in a ton of revenue off of tourism once the movie has been released.

The Job Opportunities

The Movie industry also opens up a plentiful amount of jobs when filming movies. There are at least a hundred actors and actresses in every movie, and it would be a very long list if I listed every job available when creating a possibly high grossing film. There is typically only two people that get the title of producer and director but there are many, many people that assist such positions. If you watch the credits at the end of a film you will be able to see just how many people have assisted in the making of that particular movie. Some of the employees do not even make the credit list. Directors and Actors make millions off of one film. Joss Whedon, director of "The Avengers", made $254 million in the year 2012. A large sum of that came from the movie "The Avengers".

The Concession Stand

Most people probably believe that the bulk of theaters profit is made from ticket sales. When in reality the main profit of individual movie theaters comes from their concession stands. As I previously mentioned in my earlier post ticket sales are mainly credited to the movie studios not the individual theaters. This is why prices for concessions are usually more than the ticket itself. Without the pricey snacks, most movie theaters would not stay in business. This is why theaters like Cinemark charge $6.50 for a fifteen cent bag of popcorn. Almost eighty-five percent of movie theaters profit is made from the theaters concessions. Sadly this is the only way theaters can make substantial profit.

Various Film Merchandise

When a popular movie is released there is usually a line of screaming fans behind it. Movie industry also make money from soliciting their movie through various merchandise that they sell. Sometimes film studios make more profit from selling film-related merchandise than they do from the actual film itself. Film related merchandise can be anything like posters, t-shirts, jewelry, action figures and on. Some examples of films that have made major profits off of their merchandise are "Harry Potter", "Star Wars", "Batman", "Toy Story", and "Lord of the Rings". Major studios have learned to use movie related products to not only generate revenue, but utilize the products to promote and solicit an upcoming film. Almost nearly forty percent of a films merchandise is sold before the movie is released. An example of an entertainment company that heavily uses merchandising is Disney. Licensed products represented nearly $66.5 billon in retail sales in 1990 and has grown to nearly $110 billion. It is estimated that $16 billion dollars of that is derived from the film industry.

Ticket Revenue

It’s easy to say that one of the bigger impacts that the movie industry has on the economy is with Box Office sales. On an opening weekend, millions of dollars can be made on a single movie. Ticket sales average over 1 billion dollars in a year. The chart below shows the average total box office gross of 351 of the most popular, and highest grossing movies that came out this year. These ticket sales are mostly credited toward the movie studios not the individual movie theaters. Of course the percentage of ticket sales in movie theaters decreases each week the movie is in the theater. So for the theater owners to make any serious profit the movie has to pull in a sizeable amount of viewers for a couple of weeks. On opening night the studio will take in 70 - 80 percent of gross box office sales. But the percentatge shrinks to 35 percent by the fifth or sixth week. The longer the movie is able to stay in theaters the more profit the individual theater owners will make. As you can see quite a bit of money is made off of ticket sales for the movie industry.
